Western Governors University is a private non-profit online university that was established in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors. When the governors designed the university they incorporate five themes: Responsiveness to employment and societal needs; A focus on competency-based education; expanding access; cost-effectiveness; and development of a technology infrastructure.

The university’s mission is as follows: The principal mission of Western Governors University is to improve quality and expand access to post-secondary educational opportunities by providing a means for individuals to learn independent of time and place and to earn competency-based degrees and other credentials that are credible to both academic institutions and employers.
